The Death he didnt deserve
Horror struck Fran as she heard Burt groaning in pain. At first she thought he was groaning about the pain in his back from lifting heavy objects in the shed, but she soon realized it was much more serious. As she went into the living room she saw Burt on the ground clutching his heart rolling backwards and forwards. She immediately ran to the telephone to call 111 The phone began to call, but she couldnt hear Burt anymore.
Sadness overcame Tom as he read the letter from the Invercargill Property Committee. What was written is as follows:
Dear Tom,
We are sorry to inform you that your family friend/relative Burt Munro has died from a serious heart attack. In his house, a will was found and in this will he wrote you to acquire the following:
My Shed
All the tools inside the shed
My Fastest Indian
My dog
My Lemon Tree

Invercargill Property Committee
A few days later Tom received yet another letter, but this time it was from Fran. It was an invitation to Burts funeral. Tears streamed down his face as he began to read it. The funeral was going to be held at Burts home in two days time. He was also invited to say a few words about Burt. I sure have a lot to say he thought.
People in black clothing slowly began to fill the seats at Burts funeral. It was being held outside, next to the shed Burt used to treasure with all his heart. There were many people there: the bikers, George and his wife, Doris and many people that Burt made friends with in on the long trip in America including Tina, Fernando, Rusty and Jim all here to pay their respects. Tom was still inside his house when he heard the saluting trumpet outside; he was overwhelmed with it all, he couldnt even leave his own house. He thought back to when he was a kid, when he used to visit Burt on a daily basis, explore his shed and watch Burts every move. Ever since that time when Burt broke the speed record with his Indian Tom has always aspired to be just like him, so for Burts sake, Tom walked out the door and over to Burts property.
Fran walked onto the podium and turned around to face the audience. Everyone could see the tears that formed in her eyes as she spoke; the people knew straight away that this was coming from the heart. Just yesterday I remembered when Burt and I had our first date. It was to his raffle party where he tried to raise enough money for him to go to America for the first time. Im sure many of you would remember it as well. she said as people nodded in agreement. During the party, some bikers came and challenged Burt to a race, he accepted of course, the next day I found him on the beach by himself looking out at the sea. He told me that all he wanted to do is go out and prove to everyone that he really does own the Worlds fastest Indian, but that the only way to prove that would be to go to Bonneville in America. That was his dream, only a few years ago he thought is was impossible but he went to the salt flats and he achieved his goal and put Invercargill on the map! said Fran. And I will always love him for that
she whispered as she walked back to her seat.
Tina the transvestite Burt met at the motel he stayed at in America stood up and walked onto the podium also full of tears. She exclaimed Burt had a very unique personality; he was very easy to make friends with because of it. At first you found him strange and different then you find yourself going crazy over him, seeing how he is determined at everything he does, you find him so wonderful that you couldnt imagine life without him. He never looked at what you are; he distinguishes you by WHO you are. He didnt care about your sexuality, your religion or what you try to be, he sees through it all to make friends with the person you are. I have never and will never meet anyone quite like Burt; he had something special, something people would die for. Therefore I will never forget him or what he achieved during his lifetime.. I will always keep him close to my heart for I never want to forget him
she whispered as she sat back in her seat and began to sob.
Jim slowly walked onto the podium and glanced at the people in their seats, many of them were crying while the rest were just trying to hold it back. Burt was a very determined man he said and he lived every day to the fullest, trying his best at everything he did and making a heap of life-long friends along the way he yelled. He created his own philosophy that I still use to this day, it was If you dont follow through your dreams you might as well as been a vegetable and I believe in that 100% and so did Burt, his whole life he tried to achieve something no New Zealander has ever done and achieved highest marks. He never limited himself to what he can. Age was no barrier to him, he persisted his whole life
I will always admire him for that. He said as he turned around to look at the coffin on the stage and walk down back to his seat.
At that moment Tom had just arrived at the funeral. He was all red-faced but still he pushed on to get onto the podium. He turned around to stare at the coffin onstage then looked out to the people in their seats, weeping for the man they knew so well as a friendly, kind-hearted person. Tom sighed then began to speak Burt was the biggest aspiration in my life and made a big impact on want I want to be in the world, when I was younger I used to visit him everyday, I would always find him in his shed, working on his Fastest Indian
He saw his parents nod as he said that Burt has made a big impact on my life and my personality, he taught me to be kind to others no matter who they are or what they do, he taught me that goals are made to accomplished not just so it can sit there and you can imagine what life me like after you achieve it. You never really know what can happen or what can hold you down Burt told me but whatever it is it cant stop you from trying again. Tom started crying on the podium as did so many people in the seats did below him. He managed to calm himself down and glanced down at his cue cards. I loved him so much; he changed my view on the people I am around today and how lucky I am to have there here, next to me, all day and everyday. I am grateful to have known such a great and wonderful man. I will think of him whenever I see a motorcycle, whenever I see a lemon tree and whenever I see someone reaching for their dreams
. Thank you. He said half crying. Tom turned around and ran to the coffin and hugged it with all his might and said Good on ya mate!
